4. Microsoft: $382.4 billion

iPhone Accounts for 18.2 Percent of Smartphone Sales but 92 Percent of Industry Profits: Study

Smartphone sales may be slowing for some tech companies, but not for Apple.

Analysts expect another powerhouse performance from the California tech giant when it reports quarterly financial results Tuesday. Apple's signature iPhones remain popular, even as other smartphone makers are seeing demand slow down.

Wall Street analysts estimate Apple will report a hefty $10.3 billion (roughly Rs. 65,565 crores) in profit after selling $49 billion (roughly Rs. 3,11,911 crores) worth of iPhones, iPads, Mac computers and other products during the April-June quarter. That's an increase of more than 30 percent in both revenue and profit from the same period a year earlier.

Apple has said it won't release sales figures for the new Apple Watch, though some analysts believe demand has fallen since Apple introduced the wearable gadget three months ago. But it almost doesn't matter: As in other recent quarters, Apple will reap its biggest rewards from its smartphones, especially the new, big-screen iPhone 6 (Review | Pictures) and iPhone 6 Plus(Review | Pictures) models introduced last fall. Here's why:

Bigger screens are popular
People use smartphones for social networking, playing games, looking at pictures - far more than they use them to make calls. And for those activities, many users prefer a bigger screen.

Several analysts say their studies confirm Apple CEO Tim Cook's claim that many recent iPhonebuyers are people who switched from Androidphones. Some consumers were drawn to Android devices in recent years because they had bigger screens, but Apple's decision to increase the iPhone's screen size is persuading Android owners to defect, said Ryan Reith, who tracks smartphone sales for the research firm IDC.

Apple likely sold about 47 million iPhones during the most recent quarter, or 34 percent more than a year earlier, according to analysts polled by FactSet.

iphone are hugely profitable
At an average selling price of more than $600, before carrier subsidies, Apple's phones are more expensive than many competing Android models, but they also provide more profit.

While Apple doesn't break out the numbers, Canaccord Genuity analyst Michael Walkley estimates that during the first three months of 2015, Apple reaped 92 percent of the $16.6 billion (roughly Rs. 1,05,668 crores) in operating profit generated from smartphones by companies around the world.

Samsung sold more phones than Apple during that period, but many of them were lower-priced models, giving Samsung only about 15 percent of the industry's operating profits, according to Walkley. He estimates other companies operated their smartphone business at a loss or broke even.

Apple's rivals face challenges
Apple sold about 18.2 percent of all the smartphones worldwide in the first quarter of 2015, while Samsung had 24.5 percent of the market, according to IDC. But Samsung has said it expects a drop in profit for the April-June quarter, apparently because sales of its new Galaxy S6 models fell short of expectations.

HTC has also lowered its revenue forecast for the quarter, as it blamed weak sales in China and lower demand for high-end Android phones. Microsoft, meanwhile, is cutting 7,600 jobs and writing down the value of its Nokia phone division by $7.6 billion (roughly Rs.48,317 crores), essentially acknowledging that its effort to build a business selling Windows smartphones had failed. Microsoft also reports earnings Tuesday.

Although each company has its own issues, experts say smartphone sales are slowing in many developed countries because most people already own one. IDC is forecasting an 11 percent increase in global smartphone sales this year, but that's down from 28 percent in 2014.

Phone makers using Google's Android operating system will see even slower growth of about 8.5 percent. But IDC predicts iPhone sales will grow by 23 percent this year.

Demand for Apple Watch isn't clear
Most experts say iPhone sales will get another bump when Apple releases new models this fall. Analysts say a majority of iPhone owners are still using older models, such as the iPhone 4 or iPhone 5. As a result, they say, those users are likely to buy new iPhones when their two-year wireless contracts expire.

The picture isn't quite as rosy for some other Apple products. Sales of the once-vaunted iPad tablet computer have been declining for several quarters. And while the company says demand for the Apple Watch is strong, analysts have produced estimates that range from bullish to lackluster.

Though Apple has often trumpeted sales results for new products, Cook has said he doesn't want to reveal Apple Watch figures for competitive reasons. Instead, Apple will lump revenue from the watch into its "Other Products" category, which includes the iPod media player, Apple TV streaming device and Beats headphones.

HomeBollywood Nawazuddin Siddiqui: The Farmer's Son Who Became Bollywood's Most Wanted Agencies |

IT IS A LONG WAY FROM HIS HUMBLE BEGINNINGS IN UTTAR PRADESH TO WORKING WITH TOP BOLLYWOOD ACTORS LIKE SALMAN KHAN, SHAH RUKH

The New York Times describes Ant-Man star Paul Rudd as 'the MSG of actors' - in Bollywood, that term could well be applied to Nawazuddin Siddiqui: every movie is made better with him in it. And yet, this is a discovery relatively recently made by Bollywood and, in turn, the paying audience. Nawazuddin's is a story worthy of a Bollywood plot: the son of a north Indian farmer, one of nine children, rising to become one of the new faces of independent Hindi cinema.

It is a long way from his humble beginnings in Uttar Pradesh, where he became the first graduate from his village with a degree in chemistry. After training at Delhi's National School of Drama, smitten with acting, he landed his first film appearance in the 1999 Aamir Khan movie Sarfarosh, and moved to Mumbai in 2000.

The happy ending was 12 long years in the making. He struggled and appeared in bit parts, often earning little cash, before he really became established.

Nawazuddin told news agency PTI: "I did not come here (in Mumbai) thinking of becoming a Bollywood actor. I wanted to do TV. But no one gave me a chance in TV. So I started doing C-grade films for five-six years. I did one and two scenes-role. I did not dream much as it would have led to disappointment."

His pinball trajectory included blink and miss roles in films like Munna Bhai MBBS, Black Friday, Manorama Six Feet Under and Aaja Nachle. In director Anurag Kashyap's Dev D, he appeared in the song Emotional Atyachar.

And then, in 2012, everything changed. He notched up success after success starting with KahaaniGangs of WasseypurMiss Lovely and Talaash followed. There was no looking back.

Awards followed, as well as other acclaimed films such as The Lunchbox and Liar's Dice. Then, a tryst with mainstream blockbusters in the form of Salman Khan's 2014 film Kick.

The 41-year-old actor's resume currently juggles indie content, like Sriram Raghavan's dark thriller Badlapur and Ketan Mehta's Manjhi - The Mountain Man, with big ticket projects, like Salman's Bajrangi Bhaijaan which is out on Friday. He also stars with Shah Rukh Khan in next year's Raees.

The actor recently told IANS: "I enjoy doing these (commercial) films because even if five per cent of Salman's fans watch my smaller films then they will become a hit."

Samsung Galaxy J5 and Galaxy J7: First Impressions

Samsung, as most of us guessed already, introduced its new J Series in India with the launch of Galaxy J5 and Galaxy J7 on Thursday. The smartphones, which have been available in China since last month, fit into the mid-range segment based on their low prices, but offer impressive specifications and features. While the smaller Samsung Galaxy J5 is priced at Rs. 11,999, its larger sibling, the Galaxy J7, will set you back by Rs. 14,999.

Both are Flipkart exclusives for now and are available to pre-order, but will ship on July 24. The two new phones are also positioned by Samsung as affordable devices for gamers as they can potentially deliver smooth online gaming experiences using 4G LTE connectivity. Notably however, the models launched do not support TDD-LTE Band 40 (2300MHz) for 4G LTE in India, and only the FDD-LTE Band 3 (1800MHz) that has yet to see a rollout in the country.

Talking about 4G LTE, which is still being tested in some places and is yet to reach many others, Samsung has not only partnered with Flipkart for as an exclusive retailer, but has also teamed-up with Airtel. As a part of the collaboration, Galaxy J5 and Galaxy J7 users would receive double Airtel 4G LTE data along with unlimited music downloads worth Rs. 549 for six months using the Wynk Music app. Early buyers can also grab the flip wallet cover worth Rs. 999 for Rs. 199. The company has also collaborated with the popular video game company Gameloft to offer Rs. 3,200 worth of in-game credits for Galaxy J users.

With the introduction of its Galaxy J5 and Galaxy J7, Samsung has in a way replied to some of the heavy hitters in the market which are dominating the mid-range today. The two phones go up against the Xiaomi Mi 4iMotorola Moto G (Gen 2)Sony Xperia E 4G and many others. Looking at the specifications, the Galaxy J handsets seem to have raised the bar.

samsung_galaxy_j5_front_gold_ndtv.jpg

The two new Samsung smartphones both run Android 5.1.1 but have a few differences. The Samsung Galaxy J5 features a 5-inch Super Amoled HD display; a 1.2GHz quad-core Snapdragon 410 SoC; 1.5GB of RAM; 8GB of built-in storage; a 13-megapixel rear autofocus camera; a 5-megapixel front camera, and a 2,600mAh battery. As for the Samsung Galaxy J7, it features a 5.5-inch screen; 16GB of inbuilt storage, a 1.5GHz octa-core Exynos 7580 SoC, and a 3,000mAh battery. Both handsets' inbuilt storage can be expanded via microSD card (up to 128GB).

It is worth noting that the China versions of the two Galaxy J smartphones differ slightly from those launched in India. The China versions have TFT screens instead of Super Amoled. The Galaxy J5 features 16GB of inbuilt storage instead of 8GB and the Galaxy J7 is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 615 rather than the Exynos 7580.

samsung_galaxy_j7_front_ndtv.jpg

Don't get your hopes up too high in terms of appearances, as these two new phones look more or less like every other Galaxy smartphone in the market. Both sport anodised bodies, shiny cheap-looking faux-metal side bezels, and the same monotonous overall design profile. The Galaxy J7 in particular felt a lot like the Samsung Galaxy Mega 6.3, which launched back in 2013. The handset slipped out of our hands twice in a short period, but we managed to catch it. The Galaxy J5 on the other hand was easier to hold due to its compact size, which gives a better grip and makes it easier to reach all corners of the screen. Nonetheless, the gold versions of both looked pretty good.

Users who own a recent Samsung smartphone won't find much that is new in the user interfaces of the Galaxy J5 and Galaxy J7. What might appeal to them are the minor changes that come natively with Android 5.1.1 Lollipop and would be present in other handsets as well that are running the same OS version. For pure Android users, the TouchWiz UI might feel more cluttered. The overall interface, however, is snappy and doesn't make the smartphones feel slow.

samsung_galaxy_j5_top_ndtv.jpg

Looking at the prices, the use of HD (720x1280-pixel) resolution screens was pretty much expected from Samsung. Both, the 5-inch screen of the Galaxy J5 and the 5.5-inch screen of the Galaxy J7 looked saturated and more vibrant than the screens of smartphones from other brands in the same segment. While the processors in the two models are different, the end users will probably not perceive any difference between the two while using the phones. However, theoretically, the 64-bit octa-core Exynos 7580 in the Galaxy J7 should edge out the 64-bit quad-core Snapdragon 410 in the Galaxy J5.

As for storage, the Galaxy J5 on display at the event reported around 4.6GB free out of 8GB, and the Galaxy J7 showed roughly 11.5GB of 16GB free for users. MicroSD cards of up to 128GB can be used, so customers might not need to consider the Galaxy J5's lower amount of inbuilt storage a limitation. The main differences between the two models are the larger display and the slightly better battery life of the Galaxy J7.

samsung_galaxy_j5_camera_modes_ndtv.jpg

The cameras of both phones impressed us. The 13-megapixel rear camera with f/1.9 aperture seemed to work well in our limited time at the launch event. The camera app opens within a second of double-tapping the home button. Menus and options don't clutter up the screen when capturing images, but are easily accessible with a couple of taps. While the Galaxy J5 offers seven modes, namely Auto, Pro, Panorama, Continuous Shot, Beauty Face, Sound & Shot, and Sports; the Galaxy J7 comes with one additional mode: HDR. Switching to the front-facing camera, the handsets show another set of modes including a Wide-Selfie Shot. There are also front-facing flashes on both phones. Only the Continuous Mode and Pro mode seemed to perform poorly. Continuous mode didn't actually capture images as fast as expected, and the Pro mode (manual mode) had fewer options than some other phones in this price range commonly offer. Nonetheless, the cameras overall seemed to be one of the new Galaxy J devices' best features.

samsung_galaxy_j5_back_gold_ndtv.jpg

In our short time with the Galaxy J5 and Galaxy J7, we were not able to test their battery life. However, both should give a decent amount of life as they don't have any power-hungry features such as motion sensors and high-resolution screens. All said and done, the duo might prove to be serious competitors in their respective price brackets when it comes to camera quality. The Galaxy J5 is snappy, runs the latest version of Android, has expandable storage, supports 4G, and features a decent battery - all the things users care about, for under Rs. 12,000. For Rs. 3,000 more, you can get a larger display, better processor, and better battery. Stay tuned for in-depth reviews of both smartphones, coming up soon.

OnePlus 2 Touted as '2016 Flagship Killer'

OnePlus has been never so confident about its smartphone than now. The Chinese company ahead of its July 27 event where it will reveal the OnePlus 2 smartphone has branded it the '2016 flagship killer.' The OnePlus 2 title given means that the company believes its smartphone will be better than the flagships launching next year.

To recall, the OnePlus One smartphone was launched in April last year with some staggering specifications at a rather low price and was called as the '2014 flagship killer'.

OnePlus took to its social channels (Facebookand Twitter) to thank partners who worked with the company for the OnePlus 2 smartphone. The post said, "The wait is almost over. Thank you to all of our partners who helped make the #OnePlus2 possible! Together, we've created the 2016 Flagship Killer."

The post by OnePlus included an image with names of the partner companies imprinted. Some of the companies named by OnePlus include Texas Instruments, Qualcomm, Samsung, Japan Display Inc, Ricoh, and Everlight among others.

OnePlus on Wednesday announced that its OnePlus 2 smartphone would get a "new and improved" invite system. The company confirmed that it would have more invites on offer, alongside having "more launch inventory than last time". Much like last time, OnePlus 2 buyers would receive invites to share with friends, but this time OnePlus claims they would arrive faster.

A number of specifications and details of the OnePlus 2 smartphone have been revealed by the company, including dual-SIM support; a 3300mAh battery; Oxygen OS (likely to be as close to stock Android); a fingerprint sensor; a Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 v2.1 SoC; a USB Type-C port4GB of LPDDR4 RAM, and possibly a metal build. The company has tipped the pricing of the smartphone to be between $322 (roughly Rs. 20,500) and $450 (roughly Rs. 28,500).

OnePlus is set to launch its OnePlus 2 smartphone at a virtual reality event on July 27.
